FORESTRY OPERATIONS AT THURLBEAR WOODS
THURLBEAR Update
18 December 2009
The Forestry Commission has undertaken tree-harvesting work in Thurlbear Woods, which is now complete. The trails near Thulbear Woods are open but please stay on the public rights of way and adhere to the warning signs nearby. There still may be some machinery crossing or moving along these tracks or working close by.
The operations which started in mid October are part of a regular pattern of operations to manage our woodland for various objectives. A proportion of the trees have been removed in order to allow the remainder to grow on into better quality timber. In some areas, where there was a high proportion of broadleaves, conifers are being gradually removed to provide a pure broadleaved woodland habitat. Some road and ride side trees have been taken back to allow for greater open space and scrub to develop along these corridors, which provides good habitat for a number of plant and animal species. The felling has finished and the majority of the felled softwood has now been collected – the felled hardwood stacks will be collected in the New Year. Clear up operations are planned for early 2010.
Thank you for your co-operation.
